About Switzerland vignette

A Swiss vignette is a mandatory road document that should be purchased by all drivers using the Swiss motorways and certain sections of roads subject to tolls. The Swiss vignette requirement covers all motor vehicles and trailers whose GVW does not exceed 3.5t.

Since August 2023, when Switzerland introduced a digital vignette system, drivers can purchase a vignette for Switzerland either in a digital form or in the form of a traditional sticker.

The official Swiss vignette can be purchased only as an annual vignette with a 14-month validity, which starts on December 1st of the year before the purchase and ends on January 31st of the following year.

Do note that using the Swiss toll roads without having a valid vignette, either a traditional toll sticker or its digital alternative, may result in financial penalties.

Traditional toll stickers will be phased out in Switzerland once 90% of digital users choose digital vignettes.

Who needs a vignette in Switzerland?

Switzerland vignette is a mandatory toll that must be paid by all vehicles up to and including 3.5t on all Swiss motorways and expressways. The vignette requirements apply to cars, motorbikes, trailers, caravans, delivery vans and campers.

Drivers planning to use the Swiss network of toll roads can either obtain a sticker vignette or an e-vignette available online from August 1st, 2023.

Thanks to the introduction of the e-vignette system in Switzerland, it is no longer necessary to buy a physical sticker and fix it to the vehicle’s windscreen. Instead, a driver can easily purchase a digital vignette and receive its confirmation via email.

Heavy vehicles whose maximum gross weight exceeds 3.5t do not need to obtain a Swiss vignette since they are subject to a special heavy vehicle charge.

Important note:The Swiss vignettes have no cooling-off period, which means that they can be used immediately after purchasing.

How to use the Swiss digital vignette?

Digital Swiss vignette works from the moment it is purchased. There is no need to affix it to your vehicle windscreen as it is in the case of physical toll stickers. Make sure just to save your vignette confirmation and show it during the vignette control.

Failure to possess a valid vignette when using the Swiss motorways and expressways may result in financial penalty, which is currently CHF 200 plus the costs of the vignette.
